3 Simple Ways to Love The Skin You're In

Ain't nothing like walking around feeling like your absolute best because you know your skin is out here glowing like a full moon? Here's 3 very simple ways to practice better self-care by loving the skin you're in.

1. Get more Collagen into your system

Did you know that up 70% of our hair, skin & nails are actually collagen itself? Collagen also makes up all of our connective tissues. This stuff literally holds our bodies together. Here’s the catch! After 30 years old (some say even younger) your body starts losing Collagen, which is why we need to replenish it. 

I’m fairly new to the Collagen game. I’ve tried a few things here & there, but my absolute favorite product is Modere’s Liquid Biocell, SKIN. First of all, if it ain’t all natural & toxic-free I’m not going to promote it. What I love about this product in particular is that its liquid form increases collagen absorption by 50% to 60%. It almost seems counter-intuitive but it also moisturizes your skin from the inside out. Whaaaaaat? 

One of the primary ingredients is Keratin protein. For all my hair luvvah’s, this is LEGIT. Keratin helps improve the quality of your hair follicles. In fact, it can also reduce the amount of scalp dryness as well. Since I started using this product, I’ve seen my hair growth accelerate as well. 

Look honey, at 41, I’m interested in doing everything I can to age gracefully. I’m beautiful as I am, yes, but I am also interested in self-confidence at every age & stage. Collagen helps your joints and bones get stronger as well. There is no age at which this Liquid Biocell is not going to serve at least some part of this bag’o’bones.  

While age can deplete your collagen stores, here’s a few other things that can as well...

2. drastically reduce your dairy

Research from the Harvard School of Public Health found that folks who consume a lot of milk are almost 30 percent more likely to have acne than those who drink less. Skim milk seems to be a worse offender than whole milk. This is why you will hear me constantly preaching the merits of going Vegan but thats another blog post for another day.

Cows are pumped full of hormones to get them pregnant over & over & over again. Their newborn babies are stripped from them. The milk that comes from them is full of genetically modified hormones AND all of the extra cortisol they are forming from the stress of losing their calves as animals with a strong desire to bond & nurse. And when you drink a lot of cows milk, it produces acne & other skin irritations, poor gut health & other ramifications. The whole process top to bottom is fugly.

Thankfully, there are several alternatives…almond milk (what we use), soy milk, flaxseed milk, Kefir & more! A large percentage of Black Americans are Lactose intolerant. The cheese is killing us & the milk is breaking us out— let it go, Sis. Let it go. 

3. Get Better Sleep

Now here’s an easy one. You all ready sleep anyway. Just be sure youre getting enough! When youre sleeping, the skin’s repair mechanisms swing into action. Being sleep-deprived, by contrast, puts stress on the body, causing it to release more adrenaline and cortisol, which can trigger breakouts and other skin problems, says Barbara R. Reed, a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado, Denver. (Research from China found that insufficient sleep was a significant risk factor for acne among adolescents.) Make getting seven to eight hours of shut-eye your last good-skin move of each day.
